ETHEREAL SEA AND SKY
During the warm summer months along the West Coast, dinoflagellates create the glow of bioluminescence. These planktonic creatures light up with bluish white light in the turbulence of the waves. On one clear and warm day, when the temperatures were well into the 90s at our Olympic Peninsula home, we traveled in the evening to the Olympic Coast, where it was much cooler and where we expected to see bioluminescent waves. We were rewarded with this wonderful and memorable sight; with each crashing wave, the organisms lit up brightly.
