BELTED KINGFISHER
Kingfishers are notoriously skittish around people, but I finally was able to photograph one of my favorite birds right in front of my house. I set up a branch on the dock several years ago, hoping it would turn into a perching place for the Belted Kingfishers that patrol the lake shore. It did, though it took two years for them to come to the branch consistently enough that I could get a good closeup photograph. I used a remote camera setup, and was able to trigger the shutter from 50' away.
This is a male kingfisher. In this species the female has a rusty orange band across the front. It is a handsome bird, built for quick dives to get fish.
