SNOWY OWL STARE
For many years, I have sought out Snowy Owls in the winter, when they come all the way down from the Arctic regions in search of food. I have seen them in the farmlands of Michigan and along the wild coast of Washington State. In each case, they prefer locations that look rather like their Arctic home–open and flat, with few trees. When I took this photograph, there were about a dozen Snowy Owls in a small state park, and I was privileged to see them looking around and occasionally flying between driftwood stumps.
