NOT CRESTFALLEN
Among the joys of living on the Olympic Peninsula is being able to observe Steller’s Jays. These lively birds with raucous voices come to visit my feeders every day, where I put out whole peanuts specifically for them. They are so accustomed to getting peanuts here that they are convinced that they have me trained, which they clearly have. They sit in a cherry tree outside the window, all puffed up and waiting for me to appear in the morning. When I’m there, I oblige them; when I’m not, I assume they fly away disappointed. I photographed this one with its crest held high. There is certainly an intelligence to these jays, who are closely related to crows and ravens.
