FACE OF A CROW
I love Crows. These intelligent and adaptable birds can recognize individual human faces; they are affectionate with family members; and have even been known to hold Crow funerals, in which hundreds of Crows will gather and pay respect to a dead member of the species. When I photographed this Crow, I had been watching perhaps a hundred Crows as they foraged the tidal flats of Puget Sound at low tide, using their bills as tools to turn over oyster shells and look underneath for food. Several landed on a railing, and I was able to get within perhaps eight feet of this one using a long telephoto lens; I was so close that one can see the scratches on the Crow’s bill. The light background is the cloudy winter sky.
