WINTERSET
I spend winters near a community of Amish farms, so I get to see the farming activities during the cold season. You might think that the farmers would be hunkering down in winter, but nothing could be farther from the truth. Livestock needs tending. Eggs need harvesting. Maple trees need tapping. Manure needs spreading. Laundry needs drying … the list never ends. A couple of times I’ve been out photographing at the end of the day when an Amish house’s windows reflected the setting sun. That could happen with any house, of course, but the simple lines of the Amish house make for a more graphic composition than would be the case for most homes.
