AMERICAN DINER
Americans of a certain age remember going into the local diner, with its formica countertop and chrome-and-vinyl counter stools. This was the place where the waitress served endless cups of coffee and exchanged banter with the working stiffs who came in for eggs easy over with a side of hash browns.
These are long and fond memories for me, and I captured them in this photograph of an old-fashioned cafe in an old part of town. I photographed through the window when the restaurant was closed, and love the simplicity of the setting as it waits for new customers.
I think the photograph works independently of nostalgia, even though that is a part of its charm. The reflections and lines and focus all contribute to the piece.
